2010 FIFA SOCCER WORLD CUP

It’s here!!!!! There is so much info on the 2010 Soccer World Cup we thought we would create a new, separate header for this event!

2010 TICKETS - FOURTH SALE KICKS OFF

The fourth ticket sales phase for the 2010 Fifa World Cup – one of the last chances for fans to attend the first football World Cup on African soil – kicked off on Tuesday, 9 February at 12.00 Central European Time. This phase will run for 58 days, until 7 April. Tickets will be allocated on a "first come, first served, subject to availability" basis. Applications can be made via www.fifa.com/2010 or (for South African residents only) at FNB branches.

Tickets will be available during this phase for 53 of the 64 World Cup matches. Not available in this phase will be matches 5, 11, 37, 45, 54, 56, 59, 60, 61, 62 and 64, as well as the team-specific ticket series for England and Brazil.

The third ticketing sales phase for South Africa 2010 was concluded on Friday. A total of 1 206 865 tickets were requested by fans in 192 countries. Of these, 585 175 tickets were drawn successfully, and 413 072 (70.6 percent) of those were allocated to South African residents.

Outside the host country, the United States received the highest number of tickets drawn (35 262), followed by the United Kingdom (21 614), Mexico (11 893), Australia (11 804), Germany (9 692), Brazil (5 891), Canada (4 642), France (4 268) and Israel (3 677). In Africa, Botswana remained the leading country behind the hosts, with a total of 1 587 tickets drawn, followed by Mozambique (1 142). Kenya completed the top three African countries with 785 tickets.

CAPE TOURISM SECTOR ADDRESSES OVERPRICING FOR 2010

Cape Town’s tourism industry stakeholders are unified in their efforts to combat damaging international perceptions of South Africa as “an expensive destination,” ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

THOSE VUVUZELAS!!!

For millions of South Africans the vuvuzela represents the beautiful sound of the African soccer culture, but for many others its nothing else but an annoying instrument of ear-splitting noise.

As the tournament approaches, this paradoxical debate rages on; not only in the cities of South Africa, but also among the international football fraternity and, while Fifa President Mr Sepp Blatter, formerly a development officer for Fifa, remains adamant that the iconic Vuvuzela will form an integral part of the first Fifa tournament hosted in Africa, one fact remains true - the sound of the Vuvuzela horn can make you deaf.

A study conducted by Prof De Wet Swanepoel at the University of Pretoria's Communication Pathology Unit has revealed that the vuvuzela poses a significant recreational risk for noise-induced hearing loss, and also far exceeds the permissible occupational noise levels in South Africa.

Whereas the Occupational Health and Safety Act stipulates a maximum of 85 decibels (dB) for employees to be subjected to before being provided with hearing protection, Swanepoel's study measured a deafening 140dB noise level at a Premier League soccer match attended by 30 000 vuvuzela-blowing spectators. Legislation continues to state that no one should be exposed to 113dB for more than one minute without hearing protection, this measure being the lowest recorded intensity in the stadium during the same match.

During 2009, several petitions to ban the use of this horn has been sent into the world and even the Japanese football team joined in the fight, saying that the noise makes it impossible for footballers to communicate on the field; all to no avail at this stage, even with Swanepoel's research on the table.

"As a cultural instrument the vuvuzela should be kept as part of the South African soccer culture and measures should be taken to protect spectators’ hearing," he later commented.

THE PITCH AT MBOMBELA STADIUM

The pitch at the colourful Mbombela Stadium is growing. Mr Differ Mogale, 2010 host city coordinator inspected the pitch on 4th February. Grass tufts were planted in the soil two weeks ago. Green areas are starting to show and according to Mogale the pitch should be ready by the end of March or early April.

HUNTING CAUSES ONLINE ANGER

A minimum of five leopard have been hunted on a 28 000-hectare Mozambican game farm on the border of the Kruger National Park (KNP) since October, 2008.

This unusually large figure has fuelled the anger of certain SANParks bloggers, who have been hurling accusations at the Sabie Game Management Area - or Sabie Game Park (SGP) - for more than a year. These allegations include the deliberate removal of KNP fences by the game farm, the bribery of Mozambican officials to get the proper permits and the luring of animals over the border in order to be hunted. This game park also forms part of the Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA), which means two or more protected areas are adjoined and collaboratively managed across international borders.

Mr William Mabasa, HOD of communication for the KNP responded to this by stating, "If we discover that anyone is luring animals over the border to hunt them, it qualifies as poaching. If anyone can give us evidence of this, we will investigate it."

To hunt a leopard through MacDonald Safaris, one can expect to pay $7 500 and/or $21 000 per person for 14 days of hunting. Numerous species are up for hunting in SGP, like elephant, lion and rhino, and the prices are equally staggering.

SWAZILAND BUSHFIRE FESTIVAL 2010

THE 2010 PRICE RIP-OFF

Dear Eva

Thank you for pointing out that not all foreigners are automatically wealthy just because they are foreigners. Yes, the British Pound, the Euro and the Swiss Franc are stronger than the South African Rand, but South Africans tend to forget that everything in Europe from housing to transport to food to clothes is far more expensive than in South Africa, too. Like you say, most people are not related to Bill Gates and also have to work hard for their money, just like most South Africans. They are not stupid, either, and quite capable of telling the difference between normal air rates, hotel rates etc and the current rip-off rates. If I follow the surveys here in Switzerland, the reasons that people are not going to SA for the soccer world cup are too far, too expensive, too dangerous, too corrupt, too cold. They say that they don't want to spend too much of their hard-earned money to go to a cold place where they even risk to be robbed; rather stay in warm and safe Europe with a beer and a braai and watch it on TV. In Switzerland, all they've managed to sell so far is just over 600 tickets to all matches together, and apparently it's even the same for big soccer nations like England, Germany, Netherlands etc. Let's hope the surveys are wrong and people will come to South Africa and especially the Lowveld by the droves and be blissfully happy!!!

PS And where is South African Tourism by the way?! So far I havn't seen a single campaign in any media over here pointing out how beautiful South Africa is in winter, that it is warm and pleasant, dry in most of the country, the best time to see game etc! Only Jacob Zuma, currently attending a conference in Switzerland, mentioned yesterday that he hoped Switzerland and South Africa would meet in the finals where Switzerland would then have to leave the cup to South Africa...

The letter entitled Beware your cash in the ‘Letters from our readers’ section refers…

Standard Bank fosters a culture of open communication and is therefore disappointed that the bank was not given the opportunity to provide comment before this matter was published. Once Standard Bank became aware of the complaint, a thorough investigation was conducted. Standard Bank is convinced that due process was followed in this instance when the cash deposit was made:

- The money was counted in full view of the customer

- When the customer expressed dissatisfaction, the money was re-counted twice

- The customer was contacted at the end of the business day, as promised, and was advised that no surplus cash was found after the reconciliation of cash deposits for the day was completed.

It is very unfortunate that this incident occurred in the first place and Standard Bank apologises for the agitation created. Standard Bank places high priority on customer satisfaction and welcomes further opportunity to engage with the customer. If the customer remains unhappy with the outcome of this complaint, the customer is welcome to contact the banking ombudsman who will adjudicate further.
